Mxit is proud to announce the launch of our User API!

With the release of the User API, we're giving developers the ability to release social apps that build upon user information. In addition, we're providing users the ability to control whenever their non-public personal information is shared with a third-party application.

The User API opens up new API calls across 3 key areas for Mxit application developers to build upon: social graph, profile information, and media library.

Social Graph: Relationships Between Users

Our social graph API calls allow developers to interact with Mxit user friend lists, and to help users subscribe to services or invite their friends. For example, an application can use this feature to display a list of what your friends are also doing in the app.

Profile: Your Persona On Mxit

The profile API calls open up the ability for developers to view and change user avatar images and status messages, and in addition to editing the rest of the user's profile. For example, an app could sell avatar images, or offer to change a user's avatar based on their accomplishments in a game.

Media Gallery: Your Media Storage on Mxit

Developers will be able to access, organize, and upload media files to an individual Mxit user's media library. For example, an application can upload a picture into a user's gallery, or display their favorite images.

Thanks to our patient alpha testers for their excellent feedback, and we're looking forward to seeing what apps our developers build on top of our APIs! If you're interested in building a new Mxit application for the first time, visit our Developer Center at http://code.mxit.com to get started.

We're going to update Tradepost (which will be renamed to Shop) to a new design within the next few weeks, and wanted to keep our developer community informed of the changes. Your apps located in the "Play Now" section of Tradepost will remain in "Games -> Play Now" for this phase of the Shop redesign.

Tradepost/Shop Redesign Changes (Phase 1)

Rename "Tradepost" to "Shop"

Refreshed graphical interface

Search!

Added "Apps" and "Games" sections to make it easier to discover Mxit applications

Less root menu items (Simpler navigation)

Users can "Share" an item with others in your contact roster

Users can "Respect" an item (only once per user)

To give you an idea of what the new Shop will look like, here's a preview of the new design on an Android phone:
