Thread: File upload on Samsung

    File upload on Samsung

    Hi,

We are busy testing a portal that requires the user to upload a picture and we cannot find the upload functionality on Samsung S2 or Samsung E250 (we have tried with other portals that also handle file upload with no success either). It works perfectly on Evo, IPhone and other devices. Does MXit on these platforms lack the capability to upload files?

    Cheers,

    Adrien

I second this - the option is not on e250

    Hi

Yes that's correct, unfortunately the E250 does not support file uploads because of its limited memory.

    Hi guys,

That is correct Laursch, of our top 10 phones, only the E250 cannot handle file uploads. Have a look at our top 10 phones documented here - http://dev.mxit.com/docs/most-popular-phones), we have added some features such as 'Gaming Markup' and 'Latest Mxit Client version' and will be adding other features in future for your convenience as well.

Something else INSANELY annoying is the 150kb limit on some phones when uploading. If i recall its on the blackberry... impossible to take a pic < 150kb. As i write this i think there may be a setting somewhere
on BB to lower the quality but there is a definite usability issue around it that shud be looked at from Mxit client
    point of view.

Real pity about no pic uploads on e250 since the user base is so high...

On the new versions of MXit the limit is 1024kb. Unfortunate that the e250 does not support that new MXit.

    Hi Anton & Stealthman,

Agree with you, it sucks that the E250 cannot upload images, however it seems like users are upgrading slowly but surely, perhaps due to this issue.

As Stealthman mentioned, the maximum size for images is between 150kb - 1mb with the new Mxit version, i recommend not uploading images this size due to data charges but it is possible.

I sat down with our client developers and went over the issue. The reason we haven't been able to enable image upload on the Samsung E250 is because of the phone doesn't have enough memory, because with the Mxit app running (as lean as it is!), there's only 274 KB of phone memory available.

We've optimized the client as much as we can for phones that have very little memory, but when the client is running on a phone that doesn't have enough memory to support all the Mxit client features, the Mxit client turns off the camera and file upload features to give it enough memory to run.

It's the best tradeoff our client team could find to allow the Mxit app to run on these low-memory phones.

Yeah, i realized it was a memory issue. Seems like a dead end street. On the bright side, the E250 will fade away eventually.

I have a user with a Samsung Galaxy:
    the UA is :
    Android | Mozilla Compatible/5.0 (Android; Mxit Mobi/6.2.3.3/1.8.5.168; U Opera Mini/3.1

"I can only upload pictures to my galaxy, and not to other apps... I followed the steps but I don't have the "send file" option"

Do file uploads to apps work on the Android version?

And so the answer to my own question:

On a HTC Desire running some custom rom, I am able to draw a picture and send that
but when I choose Send Media -> Send File -> From gallery, then nothing gets sent.

Taking a Photo and then clicking the Tick button to send it leaves you stuck in some
weird state where the screen shows:

    "You: sent a picture (23kb)"
The thumbnail and 2 buttons - View and More...

Please try and test this yourselves.

This holds true for MxPix aswell.

    Hi Anton,

The previous Android versions did unfortunately not support file uploads, we simply didn't have this ability included in the spec for the older versions. The new version, 6.3.0.981, however is in production now and includes the 'file upload' capability. Please download this version from our Wap site and see if it works for you.

Should you have any further issues, please let us know.
